Northern Michigan resort’s $500K convention center project will create fresh venue for Northern Michigan

GAYLORD, MI - Treetops Resort is known for its award-winning golf courses that are a big draw three seasons of the year, with its ski hills filling the parking lots during the winter.

But while these outdoor visitors are sinking their putts and shredding on the slopes, the resort’s large convention center adjoining the Main Lodge is booked for wedding receptions, conferences, municipal meetings and more.

Now the 10,000-square-foot space that dates to the 1990s is prepping for a glow-up that will make it look and feel like you’re stepping into someplace new, resort leaders say. But all those beautiful Treetops outdoor amenities - and the on-site restaurants and spa - will still be just outside the doors.

The resort this week announced the $500,000 project. Renovation and construction work will start in October, and the Treetops team expects the big space will be ready for its unveiling in December. On the to-do list: New flooring, wall coverings and artwork, plush carpet, and new furniture in a layout that will really bring together all the pieces of the center’s new look.

And this project is just the first step. The resort team has a multi-stage plan to refresh the rest of Treetops’ group meeting spaces across the property.

“This renovation is about more than aesthetics,” says Mike Flynn, the resort’s sales director. “It’s about creating an environment where people feel inspired to connect, collaborate and celebrate. We’re recreating spaces that reflect the spirit of Treetops and the needs of our guests.”

The renovation project comes on the heels of Treetops’ big win in the state’s hospitality industry. Earlier this year, it was named the 2025 “Resort of the Year” at the Governor’s Conference on Tourism.

And the convention center is a big part of Treetops’ success. “We do all kinds of events in that space,” said General Manager Barry Owens. “It’s very popular and it is one of the largest in the area.”

Treetops’ location on the edge of Gaylord - just a short drive off I-75 - makes it uniquely convenient for statewide groups who need to host an event and are looking for a centralized location that can accommodate a crowd.

The same goes for weddings large and small that might have guests traveling from across the state.

And some people especially love hosting their event at Treetops because once it’s over, they can make time for themselves to enjoy the amenities. This could mean a trip to the pool or the spa, or lingering at their lobby bar for a custom cocktail. The five golf courses beckon, but so do forest pathways in this spot.
